The 2009 Maersk Line Paper Tiger Catamaran International Championships were a great success, despite a lack of wind across the weekend. Paper Tiger sailors usually relish moderate to strong winds, but they had to endure light winds throughout this year's championship. These conditions demand intense concentration combined with attentive observation in order to bring success.
The event was won by Ben Deed of Victoria. Ben was not part of the Australian Team, as he had not qualified for the team by competing in the recent Australian Championships. He actually gained a place in the event, via a 'wildcard' entry, as a former winner.
As Deed had recently left the Paper Tiger class, he borrowed a boat from one of the host-club members. He had never previously sailed this particular boat, so this was an incredible win, especially in the difficult wind conditions that were experienced throughout the event.
Deed joins Peter Anderson (Victoria) and Garry Williams (NSW) as the only four-time winners of the International Championships. This is an incredible achievement, as only one other person has won it more than once. Both Anderson and Williams were competing at this event.
The difficult conditions still provided some incredibly close racing and the final result saw just one point between first and second and also between second and third. The runner-up was Ian Marcovitch (NSW), who is the current NSW State Champion. Third place went to Greg Williams (Victoria), who is a two-time Australian Champion.
Five different sailors won races in the seven race series. There were nine races scheduled but the lack of wind across the weekend saw two of the races cancelled. The race winners were:
